Guest Blog: Fitness for Frequent Flyers!

Been too long!

This is what happens when I take time off running = no writing and I get so lazy I have someone else write my blog for me!

Fitness for Frequent Flyers

ny type of travel can take its toll on you physically. Even vacationers experience the stress of long flights, changing time zones and different routines. Those who travel frequently for business often experience this stress even more starkly. In fact, studies indicate that those who travel 20 or more days a month are more likely to succumb to obesity as well as experience a wide range of physical ailments less common in those who travel less.

Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to promote your personal health when you travel for any reason. A little advance planning and some careful self-awareness will result in healthier, happier travels for anyone.

Before you leave, plan for optimal health and fitness during your travels. Learn about your destination. If you can choose your own accommodations, be sure to book a hotel that offers optimal fitness amenities. On a recent trip to Maui I was able to book a great hotel by doing a little research on a travel site beforehand. I found a list of Maui Hotels in order of rank and found the hotel with the best gym that was still in my price range. This was invaluable for the experience of my trip.

Pack wisely Be sure to take a refillable water bottle with you everywhere you go. This will help you remain hydrated, a key component of health and fitness. Also, bring along workout clothes and a good pair of athletic shoes. For better short workouts in small spaces, pack an exercise band with you and use it for strengthening exercises on your flight, in your hotel room or between meetings throughout your stay.

When you arrive at your destination, take the time to acquaint yourself with the area. You might wish to stop at a local health food store to pick up some healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains to keep in your room. This will help you ward off midnight munchies and also make sure you have plenty of nutritious food to fuel your body during busy days. Also, take the time to locate fitness facilities and amenities at your hotel, and spend a few moments settling into your room before running to various activities or meetings.

Throughout your stay, take opportunities to get exercise whenever they arise. Get up early and go for a run through the neighborhood or workout in your hotel room using your exercise band or an in-room fitness video. Go swimming in the evenings, or simply walk around in the hotel pool. Any exercise you can get will help you have a better trip and return home less stressed.
